Wine Timing

At Joker’s we sell mostly beer and mixed drinks, we don’t sell as much wine as many restaurants.  We’ve got excellent, choice prime rib that we offer on Thursday through Saturday as well as other excellent food and wanted to serve a premium wine.  The trouble is, when you open a standard 750 ml. bottle of wine, the clock starts ticking and if you don’t sell it in 2 to 5 days, it may oxidize.  We used to carry out of State wine in little, single serving bottles but we wanted to upgrade to a better wine.

We found the solution at one of the closest wineries in Richland.  Powers Winery on nearby Badger Mountain offers 4 premium wines in a mylar bag-in-a-box.  The mylar bags are an excellent enclosure.  When you pour a glass, no air gets in the bag.  It’s the oxygen that deteriorates the wine in open bottles.  You can open a box of wine in the bag and it stays good for months!

So how’s the wine?  Some of you may know the excellent reputation of Powers Winery.  All four of the box wines are premium wines – 2 whites and 2 reds.  We carry the Powers Cabernet Sauvignon, the Badger Mountain label organic “Pure Red”, Powers Chardonnay, and Badger Mountain organic “Pure White”.  The 09 Pure Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, with 9% Merlot.  The Pure White is an esoteric blend of Muller-Thurgau, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, and Muscat Canelli.

All the grapes are estate grown.  The Badger Mountain wines are certified organic – Badger Mountain doesn’t use pesticides in their vineyard.

All four wines are delicious.  Thanks to Powers/Badger Mountain, we can serve great wine at a reasonable price; plus it’s local instead of out of State and …. It never goes bad!

One other solution we found was in our choice of wine glasses.  You get a better “nose” with a large bowl wineglass.  The trouble was a fine, long stemmed wine glass didn’t have much of a lifespan in Joker’s busy lounge and nightclub.  So we tried stem less glasses.  One of the glasses is pictured.  It’s great – the perfect serving vessel for our premium Power’s wine-in-a-box and ….. hard to break.

Come in to Joker’s; buy a glass of your favorite variety wine and see what I mean.  Only $2.50 a glass during happy hour- 4pm to 7pm on Monday through Friday.
